URRAS NAN TURSACHAN

A cherished Neolithic past, contributing to a flourishing Hebridean present, delivering a better future for our people, our community and our heritage.

Urras nan Tursachan (or the Standing Stones Trust) is an independent not for profit charitable trust based in the Outer Hebrides

Formed in 1994, the trust has operated the Calanais Visitor Centre for over 20 years, delivering consistent growth in visitor numbers, turnover and profitability, employing over 20 people, and adding £1.5m to the local economy since opening.

Our islands are home to a precious Neolithic heritage. From the internationally famous stone circles of Calanais, to Dun Bharpa on Barra, we have a unique Neolithic landscape, and archaeological record of unquestionable international significance.

We believe that this Neolithic past is important and should be passed on to future generations better understood, managed & valued.

The Trust believes that the best way to achieve this goal is for the Hebridean Neolithic to deliver value in the present, through research, learning and tourism, encouraging people to come to our islands, to engage with Calanais, to visit, learn and enjoy this unique place, and in turn support employment, education and opportunities for the people that live here.

The Trust invests its resources to;

  • Support the exploration, research & management of the Neolithic landscape of the Outer Hebrides

  • Ensure that this landscape and its heritage makes a significant, and sustainable contribution to the economy of our islands.

  • Champion the value of the Hebridean Neolithic, not only because of its historic importance, but because of the positive difference it makes to people’s lives.
